Djuna Barnes (b. June 12, 1892, Storm King Mountain, (near Cornwall-on-Hudson) New York – d. June 18, 1982, New York City) was an American artist, illustrator, journalist, and writer best known for her novel Nightwood (1936), a cult classic of lesbian fiction and an important work of modernist literature.
She wrote poetry, plays, novels, and magazine articles, while living in New York City and Paris, and travelling extensively.
"Miss Djuna Barnes's novel Nightwood , which we published in 1936, has long been recognized as a masterpiece. The author, after twenty years, has given us a second masterpiece in The Antiphon. This is a verse play : it is the nearest thing written in our time to the tragedies of the Jacobean poets — Middleton, Webster, Ford or Tourneur.
Edwin Muir says : I feel myself that The Antiphon is one of the greatest things that have been written in our time, and that it would be a disaster if it were never to be known." — from the dustjacket.
Some discolouring of end-papers, else very good in price-clipped dustjacket ( spine of jacket tape-repaired on back). Ex libris Patricia McKenzie-Porter, Canadian author. 65.00
