Le CARRÉ, John. The Honourable Schoolboy. London : Hodder and Stoughton, (1977). First Printing. Pp (6),[vii]-viii,(6),-532. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Map end-papers.
"Mr. George Smiley is tubby, bespectacled, cuckolded, and teetering on the brink of retirement. The merest exertion appears to leave him winded. He is also, in le Carré'e latest novel, acting chief of the British Secret Service, known in le Carré-land as the Circus. Far from glamorous, his appointment is more like a retribution. Having unmasked the traitor who for thirty years, from within its ranks, betrayed its inmost secrets to the Russians, Smiley has been ordered to stay on and clean the stable. Prospects of action seem non-existent. The Circus lacks funds and favour in the Whitehall market. Rival Ministries are secretly contending for its charter. Overseas staff, blown sky-high, are being called home in droves and pensioned off. The American agencies conduct only a token trade with their British sister service, and the Whitehall barons, still smarting from the scandal, have imposed ferocious restrictions which appear to deny the Circus all chance of resurrection.
Yet almost from his first day in office George Smiley goes over to the attack. His adversary is Karla, workname of the Soviet case officer who masterminded the Circus's ruin. His battleground is Hong Kong, and choice of weapons is the Honourable Gerald Westerby, eastern hand, veteran of several marriages, Fleet Street hack and son of old Sambo, now dead, who until his bankruptcy ruled over an entire empire of newspapers.
'You point me and I'll march,' says Jerry Westerby, answering the call to arms. Thus abdicating responsibility for his own actions, he steps obligingly into the blue. Westerby's odyssey takes him not only to Hong Kong, but to collapsing Cambodia and Vietnam, to North East Thailand, and finally, in a dénoument of stunning magnificence - to the southermost tip of the Hong Kong archipelago, to the very edge of the China Sea. His belated coming of age, his bounding humanity striving to get out, his courage and his recognition of love, are set in mounting dramatic contrast to the ever-growing heeds of the service which owns his allegiance." - from the dj."
