"Grace Hue Butt is a Canadian playwright whose work has received awards both within and outside her own Province of Newfoundland, including winning entries in the annual provincial Arts and Letters Competitions and first prize in an international competition for a play produced at the Dublin TheatreFestival. In 1937 Grace Butt founded the St. John's Players, Newfoundland' s first 'little theatre' company. Among the plays she directed was her 'Road Through Melton', the first full-length Newfoundland play to be produced. Over the years other plays followed, with themes both general and provincial in appeal, in styles both traditional and experimental. Poems,a number ofthem also award-winning, short stories, and articles by her have appeared in magazines and anthologies; and her radio plays, documentaries and commentaries have been produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company." - from rear.
