BRUCE, Charles. The Flowing Summer. Illustrations by Winnifred Fox. Toronto& Halifax : The Ryerson Press, (1947). First Edition. Pp. (6),1-31,(1). 8v o, blue paper-covered boards. "The Flowing Summer is essentially a story, the story of Lee, the city twelve-year-old; of Old Jack, his grandfather; ofThe Woman; and Eric, the boy next door. It is also the story of The River, The Strait, Graham's Beach, the woods and the herring run, and how they ca me to be woven into the fabric of a boy's thinking. It is a poem almost by accident. Its authorsays, 'The Flowing Summer sprouted as a story, and was written first in prose, but I had been thinking of how narrative verse is so frequently concerned with the heroic . . . wondering whether certain aspects of the undramatic continuity in common living could live again in poetry. And almost before I knew it The Flowing Summer was being worked out in asimple verse form; a form in which, if I were lucky, "the happy acddent of poetry might occur.' Winifred Fox's black-and-white illustratioions blend perfectly with the verse. Both the auththor and illustrator, incidentally, know intimately the atmosphere they have conveyed hereā€”the atmosphere, and the people, of the farmlands sloping down to the Atlantic coast of Canada."- from the dj. Sections: 1. Journey Alone, 2. The Nets, 3. The Herring-Run , 4. Lee's Island, 5. The Hayfield, 6. The Attic, 7. The Dreaming Trout, 8.End of Summer, 9. Morning Wind.
