BRADBURY, Malcolm. Cuts. Illustrations by Tom Phillips. New York : Harper &Row, (1987). First US Edition. Pp (11),12-143,(1). Illustrated. 8vo, grey paper covered boards, off-white cloth spine, gilt border to cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine. Sir Malcolm Stanley Bradbury CBE (b. September 7, 1932, Sheffield – d. November 27, 2000, Norwich) was an English author and academic. "An irreverent romp through the world that gave us 'Brideshead Revisited' and 'The Jewel in the Crown,' Cuts takes one hapless, unknown writer of genius away from his night-school teaching duties and puts him into the glass towers of Eldorado Television. It is the summer of 1986, and everywhere Maggie Thatcher's government is mmaking cuts - cutting interest rates, public expenditures, the arts, the sciences, and the BBC. When Lord Mellow, head of Eldorado, begins to suspect that his company might come under the knife, and the lead role in his next big venture— "Gladstone, Manof Empire"—is turned down by the great theatrical knight Sir Luke Trimingh am, Mellow sets out to do the blockbuster that will assure Eldorado's future. But it must be new. No more black property doors with number 10 painted on them or mockups of the House of Commons erected on the lot. No more country houses with fountains. "I do not want any more End of Empire ... I don't want anv story where the hero has an arm off....I want something epic that doesn't require millions of pounds for doing the whole of the Retreat from Moscow. I want something that's art, but is also life at its deepest and most telling." So enters the mild-mannered Henry Babbacombe, author of Numen, Composition 2, and Composition 4, plus one in between that was never published. Henry's catastrophic career at Eldorado Television gives us an irresistibly funnv view of a piece of the U.K. that Americans have come to knowand love." (from the dj). Light discolouration of cloth at tail of spine, else very good in unclipped dustjacket. 15.00
