Peter Malcolm de Brissac Dickinson, OBE, FRSL (b. December 16, 1927, Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia – d. December 16, 2015, Winchester, Hampshire) was an English author and poet, best known for children's books and detective stories.

This is the fourth book in the Jimmy Pibble crime series.

"Everybody likes the children. The moment a visitor passes the High Domestic Grandiose portals of the McNair Foundation (yearned after by the local Preservation Society) he feels an irrational friendliness towards the inmates. They suffer from an obscure disease which lulls their dormouse metabolisms by stages to a final incommunicative sleep, but while they live they share a curious para-psychological gift of communal dreaming and thought transference.

Few people can get through to them, but one with better success than most outsiders happens to be ex-Detective Superintendent James Pibble whose involvement at the McNair begins as an embarrassing duty call and develops through hamburgers and champagne with the millionaire financier of this unorthodox charitable organisation to tea and fairy cakes with the McNair's ancient patron. Between these feats of social ingestion Pibble discovers the work of the Foundation is being carried on with singleminded zeal by three people, but is there something manic behind the devotion of one of them? Does the McNair harbour an ambition as insidious and as deadly as the disease it has been founded to fight?

Now, alas, no longer an accredited member of the Metropolitan Police Force, Jimmy Pibble is able to turn over the curous leafmould of other people's lives with a delicate persistence the rule book denies his former colleagues." - Abstract and jacket flap.
