H.M.S. Wideawake : Destroyer and Preserver.

STITT, George, Lieutenant-Commander. H.M.S. Wideawake : Destroyer and Preserver. With a foreword by Commander Anthony Kimmins. London : George Allen &Unwin, (1943). Pp 164. Illustrated. Small 8vo, blue cloth. Law 1078. A fic tionalized account of service in an ancient "Vee" class destroyer on escortduty during the Second World War. Stitt was at sea early in the war, and s o the experiences recounted are closely based on observed facts. "The storyof H.M.S. Wideawake is that of a 'Vee' class destroyer - one of those vete rans of the last war - from the commencement of hostilities to the end of August 1940. Facts are, therefore, substantially accurate, though I have disguised the name of this particular destroyer and of all those officers and men connected with her. In the account, I have first endeavoured to recapture that outlook held by the majority of us in the early days of war, when we suffered from the Maginot mentality and believed that economic pressure at sea, and the impregnable line of fortresses on the Continent, would soon cause Germany to collapse. I have tried to describe the monotony of, and the difficulties associated with, convoy work, and then to show how the RoyalNavy reacted to the smashing of those comfortable beliefs held throughout the country, and wrote imperishable epics in the in the annals of Naval history." Cloth heavily rubbed, worn at extremities, slightly cocked, else very good. 45.00
