Nicholas Blake is a pseudonym of Cecil Day-Lewis. "In the West of Ireland in the 1930s a young novelist rents a lonely cottage to write his new book in peace. Atonce, and without great resistance, he is seduced by the wife of the loca squireen. Harriet's husband is an older man — violent, impoverished, gone to seed, who had once fought famously against the Black and Tans; a dangerous man. What began as seduction turns into something like love, and a very unusual 'eternal triangle' situation soonbecomes entirely horrific. The Private Wound is a classical whodunit, and the identity of the murderer is closely hidden. But it it is much more thanthis: a study of three very individual characters, each precisely observed , develops into high drama against the soft bankground of the hills and waters of the Irish Western seaboard, which here are movingly evoked." - from the dj flap.
