"It was as a new master of the short siory that Angus Wilson first won an avid following and critical acclaim in England and Amenca (Such Darling Dodos, 1951, and The Wrong Set, 1950). Recently, Mr. Wilson's enormously successful novel Anglo-Saxon Attitudes greatly enlarged his audience. His latest book offers eight new stories. Pin-pointed against the background of an England where the lines of class and caste are becoming blurred as traditional values lose much of their force, the characters in these tales seek sometimes cheerfully, sometimes desperately — to get their true bearings on the mapof society.
In one of the four longer stories, the path of rugged individualism is explored by the aged Lord Peacehaven beyond the point of no return. In another, a seventeen-year-old boy finds a dubious retreat from his immature lntellectualism with his ubcle's unstable girl friend. In the title story, a simpleton prince of "teddy boys," seeking a truth to set himself free, attains a criminal record. The fourth of the longer stories, 'More Friend than Lodger," is surely one of the funniest stories to appear since the War in its first-person account of a publishing marriage that becomes a triangle.
The whole collection is marked with an unerring accuracy of contemporary detail and an almost unholy insight into off-beat individuals. It is this which ranks Mr. Wilson's work among the most exciting and original of the postwar period." - from the dj.
