HOWARD, Richard. Findings. New York : Atheneum, 1971. First Edition. Pp (8),vii,(3),3-84,(2). 8vo, printed red and gold card covers. This is the author's fourth book of verse. "Half oi consists of the dramatic monologues, apostrophes and epistles which this poet made specifically his own in that book [Untitled Subjects], by speaking as someone else. Of these along poem in the voice of Robert browning on the last day of his life is surely the mostambitious, though others in which the utterance is shared by the charachte rs in Caspar David Friedrich's famous landscape The Chalk Cliffs of Rügen, or in which we hear the magisterial deprecations of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the outcries of Leopardi, are scarcely less so. The remainder of the book consists of poems of a more directly personal nature; their intimacy perhapsis deceptive. As Delacroix once said, to be 20 and poet is to be 20; to be 40 and a poet is to be a poet. Richard Howard is 40, and the Pulitzer Priz e he received last year merely called to the attention of a wider audience the resolute making which is his enterprise." - rear cover.
