PERCY, H.R. An Innocent Bystander : A novel. Toronto : Macmillan of Canada,(1989). First Printing. Pp. (6),1-[234]. 8vo, green cloth with grey titles to spine. Herbert Rolland (Bill) Percy (b. August 6, 1920, Burham, Kent, E ngland - d. December 17, 1996, Nova Scotia) a British-born Canadian writer,. "Gaspar Sanchez Carames, a former university professor of English, lies in a dank South American jail. He has no idea why he was arrested and imprisoned and, when he is interrogated, he does not know what his captors want him to tell them. All he knows is that his fellow prisoner, a man he had known at university in Cambridge twenty years before, is an internationally wanted terrorist, Paulo Martinez. Writing with pencil stubs on scraps of paper, Gaspar tries to keep fear and madness at bay by piecing together what has happened to Paulo since they both left Cambridge. By reliving his own memories he also tries to understand how he has become unwittingly implicated in the terrorist's crimes. Over and over again he sees in his mind's eye the scene in a city park that preceded his arrest: what did he witness and what does it mean? Why do the images of that day continue to haunt him? Gradually, Gaspar assembles the pieces of the puzzle, finding a pattern behind what seemed at first to be only random events and coincidence. Even details that he once thought were irrelevant start to take on a sinister meaning ashe unravels the mystery of his incarceration, and he comes to realize the truth of the terrorists' maxim: 'There is no such thing as an innocent bystander'." - from the dustjacket.
