BRADBURY, Malcolm. Stepping Westward : A Novel. London : Secker & Warburg, (1965). First Edition. Pp (8),9-415,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth, silver titles to spine. Sir Malcolm Stanley Bradbury CBE (b. September 7, 1932, Sheffield – d. November 27, 2000, Norwich) was an English author and academic. "In his new novel, Malcolm Bradbury describes the adventures of James Walker, young middie-aged provincial author of three novels, from the day he gets the invitation from the Benedict Arnold University somewhere just east of the Rockies to be their resident writer for the forthcoming years. Six months later he is shambling aboard a homeward-bound liner to be greeted by the hated companion of the outward voyage, Lady Hunt-Francis, who has chritened him"Mr. Big Ears". Diffident, shambling, with a wife - left behind - who make s his decisions for him, yet with an obstinate streak of liberal honesty about him, this modern innocent abroad steps westwards via the tourist class of a transatlantic liner, through five nightmare days in New York, to meet the faculty and later the students of Benedict Arnold. At first he is a disappointment to his hosts, and in particular to Professor Bernard Froelich, his chief sponsor, who is including a chapter on his books in his projectedvolume "Plight". Walker seems neither particularly young nor at all angry. But soon therecomes to him a sense of release, almost of acceptance, and o f the glory of the Rockies on the horizon. What price Nottingham? He cableshis wife, asking for a divorce. Until the question of the loyalty oath sup ervenes he has won acceptance, and from his students as well. How this affront to his liberal conscienc is resolved and how it leads to Walker's finalreturn to security, these provide the finale for this extremely amusing no vel, behind whose glittering surface lies, however, the problem, and in this instance the defeat of liberal man." (from the dj). Very good in slightlyedgeworn dustjacket (with vertical red smudge to the rear panel). 50.00
