James Maurice Scott (b. December 13, 1906, Egypt - d. March 12, 1986, Huntingdon) was a British explorer and writer.
An adventure novel concerning a London antiquary's quest for a tremendous treasure lost during the Peruvian war of independence.
"During the Peruvian war of independence in 1821, golden ornaments, jewels and silver plate valued at eighteen million dollars disappeared from the cathedral and churches of Lima, at that time one of the richest cities of the world. It was subsequently reported that all the treasure was concealed on the island of South Trinidad, off the coast of Brazil.
On the strength of that report, half a dozen expeditions have visited this steeplv mountainous, barren, and almost inaccessible island, inhabited only by seabirds and landcrabs.
Intrigued by the facts and the legend, Alec Mann, a Londoner who works for a firm that appraises old books, art objects and estates, enlists Peter Mallard and Jocelyn Adrian to join him on the Penelope on the dangerous Atlantic crossing. Only when they are in mid ocean does Alec tell Peter and Jocelyn their destination. Enroute they are joined by the charming and disarming Jessica Harding and when they rmany land at South Trinidad the action really begins.
How the secret of South Trinidad is finally unravelled and how the long dead Pierre Canut, who was left there by pirates. aids Peter, especially, in his search makes one of the most exciting adventure stories imaginable." - from the dj.
