Pp. 375, with 2 folding maps in rear pocket. 8vo, green cloth with gilt illustration of a walrus, dory and three sailors pasted to front, gilt lettering to spine. The author's account of his involvement in a side venture of Elisha Kent Kane's 1854 arctic expedition aboard the Advance,in which in the autumn of that year, Hayes and seven others set out from R enssalaer Harbour in an attempt to reach Upernavik, in northwestern Greenland. After four months and much time spent among the Inuit of the region, they returned to the Advance, unsuccessful in their endeavour. This copy has been rebound in green cloth with [believed] original decoration pasted to upper board. Rebound, half title, title page and latter pages tape-repaired to fore-edge, both maps are tape-repaired along folds (on reverse side), some tears not repaired, ow vg. Still a very nice copy. 100.00
