MacASKILL, W.R. Lure of the Sea : Leaves from My Pictorial Log. (Halifax : Eastern Photo Engravers, 1951). Pp (88). Illustrated. Sm 4to, grey cloth with blue lettering and decoration to front. A selection of MacAskill's supremely evocative marine photography, fixing forever the iconography of coastal Atlantic Canada. Thomas Raddall writes of the photographer in his autobiography, In My Time:"I had a letter from Wallace MacAskill of Halifax, a devotee of marine photography. Years before, he had published a selection of his photographs of ships and the sea called Out of Halifax. The edition was limited and was soon snapped up. Now he had put together another collectionand asked me to write a foreword. I called on the old man in his cluttered little shop on Barrington Street, and he showed me the pictures, every one unique and beautiful. In the opinion of connoisseurs he was the best photo grapher of sea, coast, ships and seamen then living in North America. I described him in my diary in April 1951: 'He is a short stocky Cape Bretoner, speaks in a mild voice with a faintly Gaelic intonation, has a pale face, blue eyes, white hair, a jutting nose. Simple and pleasant in his ways and speech, a poet with the camera, fascinated all his life with the sea.' "Later he sent me the printer's dummy of his book, asking me to do something about the captions under the photographs. I could see what was bothering him. Most of the captions had been written apparently by one of those ecstatic lady poets who used to come out of the Halifax woodwork at the slightest whiff of tea and buns. I replaced nearly all of them and wrote the foreword. MacAskill had the book printed in a single edition (some bound in sailcloth)under the title Lure of the Sea. Like his first, it was soon snapped up. S everal years later he began assembling pictures for a third volume and again asked me to write the captions and foreword, but he died suddenly and so did the book." Includes several verse selections from Charles Bruce. Spotting to fore-edge, small white stain to bottom edge, a couple of small abrasions to rear board, else vg. 100.00
