Walter Prenties was an Ensign of the 84th Regiment of Foot, carrying dispatches from Quebec to New York during the U.S. Revolutionary War when his ship was wrecked on the west coast of Cape Breton island in November of 1780. His narrative recounts the wreck, the survivors' desperate initial efforts, their open-boat voyage in search of rescue, and the care they received from the local native population near prsent-day St. Anne's.
