"This book is a comprehensive record of Canadian government owned and operated ships, from the mid 1800s to the present. They are the civilian-crewed ships of the Canadian Coast Guard, The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and the Canadian Naval Auxillary Service - and their predecessor organizations. It includes ships of widely different size and design with spcialized tasks involving marine safety, security, research and regulation. Although primarily restricted to ships of 100 gross registered tons or over, some of the important smaller ships, such as search and rescue cutters and lifeboats, are covered as well. Hovercraft, first entering service in 1968, are also included.

Many ships are illustrated in rare old photographs digitally enhanced for clarity, in sketches and paintings by talented marine artists, and in a stunning colour section within the book. Ships histories have been compiled from many sources, both published and obscure, to provide as complete as possible." - from the inside dust jacket.
