Index. 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Studies in theHistory of Higher Education in Canada, no. 4. "Here we see a panorama of P rotestant religious thought and controversy as reflected in the creation, the development, and sometimes the demise of church-related liberal arts colleges and denominational theological seminaries. As Professor Masters tellsthe story, it is clear that a century ago it was extremely important to ac uve memoers of the churches that their children should receive higher education in a Christian atmosphere. Each denomination had its own concept of the true Christian atmosphere, so each denomination established its own colleges. But theology changed, church-related liberal arts colleges were subjected to increasingly strong secular interests, and the churches were unable to provide the necessary financial support. One after another, the church colleges became non-denominational universities or affiliates of non-denominational universities. There are now but four completely independent Protestant universities in Canada." (from the Foreword by Edward F. Sheffield). Contents : 1. Introduction: The Ideological Background; 2.
