PARSONS, Elsie Clews. Notes on Ceremonialism at Laguna. Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History. Vol. XIX, No. IV. New York :Published by order of the Trustees, 1920. Pp (2),85-131,(1). Illustrated. 8vo, grey wrappers, lettered in black. "Although Laguna was one of the first pueblos to be visited by Americans, of it there is little or no ethnographic account presumedly because the ethnographers of the Southwest have felt that because of the late origin of Laguna (settled, it is said, in 1699)and its continuous contact with Mexican and American it would present a hy brid and therefore uninteresting culture. Such a preconception overlooks the tenaciousness and ubiquity of Pueblo Indian habits of mind or culture. Moreover, the preconception is unscientific in its indifference to some ot the most significant problems of ethnology, the problems of acculturation. Itis a preconception explicable only as a variant of the race snobbery which is ever seeking for pure races." (from the Preface). Unevenly browned, spi ne ends nicked, else very good. 35.00
