MacNEICE, Louis. The Strings Are False : An Unfinished Autobiography. London : Faber and Faber, (1965). First British Edition. Pp (6),7-288, frontispiece portrait + 1 plate. Index. 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering and black panel to spine. "Early in the last war Louis MacNeice left a manuscript for safe keeping at Oxford with his friend Professor E. R. Dodds. He contemplatedpublishing it eventually, but seems afterwards to have forgotten about it. Professor Dodds, now MacNeice's literary executor, has prepared it for pub lication, and has added a further autobiographical fragment, from a book which MacNeice never completed. Finally, to show the young MacNeice as he appeared not to himself but to others, and perhaps to answer some of the questions which his story inevitably raises, Mr John Hilton, a close personal friend from school and university days, has contributed a vivid description of MacNeice as schoolboy and undergraduate, based on contemporary letters. The Strings Are False is a living, sensitive and very honest self-portrait; and an important literary document. Childhood in an Ulster rectory; school-days at Marlborough; Oxford in the Twenties; first marriage and a lectureship in Greek at Birmingham University; politics and poetry in the Thirties; the break-up of a marriage and the coming of war. That is the background. Against it, liiesize, stands the attractive and elusive figure of MacNeice himself." (from the dj). Contents : Editor's Preface, by E.R. Dodds. The Strings are False. Appendices: A. Landscapes of Childhood and Youth (pages from an unwritten book). B. 'Louis MacNeice at Marlborough and Oxford', by John Hilton. Minor foxing to edges, else very good in rubbed, smudged, browned, but unclipped, dustjacket. 25.00
