"Ornithologists, tourists, libraries and schools will find no other book that wil provide them with a complete guide to the Birds of the West Indies, which fromthe standpoint of bird life comprise the Bahama Islands and Antilles south to Granada. An eminent authority on the birds of this region has combined with two of America's leading bird artists to provide this attractive comprehensive and up-to-date book. Every species of bird known from these islands is included; 66 are illustrated in colour by Don Eckelberry, 186 are drawn in black and white by Earl Poole. After a short introduction explaining the presentation of the book, all the species, excepting 50 of the vagrants, are described with sections on local names, voice, habitat, nidification a nd range. An index of scientiific and English names is provided, and an endpaper shows the area covered. Unlike the birds of the Antilles, those of Trinidad and Tobago are closely associated with continental South America andare the subject of a separate guide by Dr. G. A. C. Herklots." (from the d j). Ian Fleming's agent 007's name came from that of this American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies. Fleming, a keen birdwatcher himself, had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist's wife that "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born". Penned notes to last page, occasional check-marks, else very good in worn and torn, price-clipped dustjacket. 50.00
