(SHILGI, Jerry). Rumba anthology : lyrics in spanish w/english translation with two accompanying cassettes. [Cassettes missing.] (San Francisco, CA), n.d. [late 1990s]. Pp 1-70,(3) printed one side only. Illustrated. 4to, black comb-bound, blue card covers, lettered in black. This is a draf t of the rumba section of the Oriba / Rumba Song Anthology. "The present work represents the long-awaited rumba secuon of the Orisha / Rumba Song Anthology - three hours of classic rumbas. with Spanish transcription, English translation, ciave markings, and some illustrations. It was put together over the last four or five years by rumberos of the San Francisco Bay Area asa study guide for aficionados of these great Afro-cuban musical traditions , without desire for profit or prestige. We remain, therefore, anonymous. However, the originator, overall administrator, and hardest worker should now be recognized: Jerry Shilgi. Jerry, while much more engaged in the Orishamaterial and his own highly developed research among the Cuban masters of the bata, selected these songs, oversaw the translation aud inputting of the material, maintained editorial control over every last comma, and in general demanded the highest standards of accuracy from his many collaborators in the community, who invested hundreds of hours in this project Jerry was also a key organizer of the Tijuana afro-cuban workshops, and it was there that he perished in an automobile accident that left another dead and one injured. He was 38 years old. At the time of his death, the manuscript was 95% complete, but still did not meet his standards for style and correctness. We, his collaborators and friends over the years, have decided to edit ttie material one last time and release it now as a service to the community and as a memorial to the man. Our version may not be as free of error and inconsistency as Jerry would have demanded and so we ask our readers to assign to us, and not to Jerry, the errors you find. We will appreciate constructive criticism and will consider a second edition if enougn substantive changes need to be made. Let us remember Jerry Shilgi at our rumbas and toques, and let us thank him as we learn and enjoy the materials he left us." (prefatory note). Minor brown stains to covers, else very good. Lacking cassettes. 30.00
