(MAZZINI, Giuseppe). HALES, E.E.Y. Mazzini and the Secret Societies : The Making of a Myth. London : Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1956. First UK Printing. Pp.(7),viii-xi,(1),13-226, including frontispiece, + 9 p. of black and white plates. Illustrated. With maps to text. 8vo, red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "The full story of Mazzini's early life, when he acquired his peculiar personal position in the revolutionary movements of Italy, and, more widely, in Europe, is here told for the first time. The author's purpose isto portray Mazzini as he really was at the time when he made his movement, before he came to London; to portray him without the cloak and dagger with which he haunted the dreams of the frightened ruling classes, but also wit hout the halo with which liberals have loved to crown him. If those who feared and those who loved Mazzini both made distorted pictures of him, they yet both contributed to make his myth, and, from the time when he launched his revolutionary societies (Young Italy in 1831 and Young Europe in 1834), until the late eighteen-sixties, when the names of Karl Marx and of Bakuninwere beginning to eclipse his own, that myth held the European revolutiona ry stage. It was an age of growing prosperity but of uneasy peace, when rulers looked back anxiously over their shoulders at what had happened at the time of the French Revolution and forward, in fear, to what the future might bring. The ancien regime was being undermined; the new Nation State was not yet built. Few could foretell the future but many, including Mazzini, were glad to try. And politically, though not religiously, Mazzini has provedto be the best prophet of them all." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1. G enoa: 'Fantasio' and his Friends; 2. Genoa: The Carbonari; 3.
