In the text the letter is dated "October 10". It was written in London to the Geneva-born Gallatin (1761-1849), who was U.S.Minister to France from 1816 to 1823.
"The following letter, printed from the original manuscript, in the possession of Mr. Gordon L. Ford, relates to the claim of France to the west coast Newfoundland fisheries, the discussion of which has been so recently revived. Though the matter has ceased to be a question in which the United States is directly interested, it nevertheless has a bearing on our own claims, and is a necessary part of the whole subject of American Fisheries" - Paul Leicester Ford's introductory Note, discussing his difficulty to find material on this question, Rush makes reference to Anspach, first published three years previously, and Reeve's History of the Government of the Island of Newfoundland, (1793, JWD Cat.6:326): "[...] a copy of which I procurred through the author, there being none on sale" - p.9.
Front wrap taped on, r.wrap almost off, tears & some loss to wraps, (as usual with this style of covering). Largely unopened, but one leaf has 3 tears where carelessly opened. Else very good. This No.87 of 250 copies printed. Very scarce. 125.00
