"On Janu ary 21, 1963, the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway ceased its scheduled operations, and the last heavily traveled truly interurban railroad passed from the scene. Continuing operations during the sixties, however, isthe Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad. The South Shore Line is a n interurban, and yet not one, to which anyone who has witnessed the 800 class freight motors with a long drag or seen the six and eight car commuter trains will attest. The South Shore combines the unique qualities of a heavy duty mainline electric railroad with the flavor of an interurban past. The accompanying photographs, mostly taken from 1959 to 1964 show the North Shore Line and the South Shore Line in varying aspects of their daily lives. The author hopes that the reader will linger awhile over the photographs a nd recall his own contacts with these two intriguing railroads." -from the dj.
