MIDDLEMISS, Norman L. Cableships. Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Shield Publications Ltd., (August 2000). First Edition. Pp. (4),[5]-160. Illustrated in black and white with photographs and silhouette line-drawings of selected vessels.Large 8vo, black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "This book is written to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first submarine cable laid in 18 50 between Dover and Calais. The cableship performs very specialised marinework and has an unusual history. Early cablelaying had to overcome the phy sical and electrical processes in transmitting underwater telegraph signals, with the first successful Transatlantic telegraph cable laid in 1866. However it took another 90 years before the first Transatlantic telephone cable was laid in 1956. The rapid development of optical fibre submarine cablessince the mid-1980s has seen massive cablelaying effort to gear up for the global Internet era. This work of reference contains full careers of 312 p ermanent and 80 chartered cablelayers since 1850 and is very profusely illustrated with two hundred scale drawings and black & white photographs of cableships." - from the dust jacket.
