BRASSETT, Edmund A., M.D. A Doctor's Pilgrimage. Philadelphia and New York : J.B. Lippincott Co., (1951). First Edition. Pp (10),11-256. 8vo (143 x 208 mm), blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Roland, Secondary Sources in the History of Canadian Medicine: A Bibliography, Volume 1, p.124; Tennyson, Cape Bretoniana 1714; Watters p.469, Rhodenizer p.467. A well-written & pleasant memoir of medical practice in Nova Scotia. New Waterford, Canso, the Nova Scotia Hospital, Little Brook, near Digby. During times of financial worry in New Waterford, Brassett and his new wife developed an admirable biblio-salve: "When things got very bad we used a special technique. We would read together Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World. At once we were transported down to the Antarctic with Scott on his last expedition. There we were in a tent, a blizzard howling around us, the temperature fifty degrees below zero, nothing to eat but a little dog-meat, and the paraffin in our Primus stove running low - separated from home and civilization by hundreds of miles of dead, barren ice and snow. From our tent down in the Antarctic we could see things like banks and debts and so on in their true perspective. If any reader has worries I recommend that he get a copy of Cherry-Garrard's book, if he can find one. Our copy is dog-eared and worn." p.101. (See also 126 & 127). Spine lettering nearly worn away, small dampspot to front board, else good. 14.00
